Time for Year End Cleaning for Your PC

It has been estimated that taking an unprotected computer for a spin on the Internet can result in the computer being infected in less than fifteen minutes. Just fifteen minutes! And yet, more than thirty percent of computer users surf the Net without any type of protection, and a whopping sixty percent of wireless networks are still unencrypted.

So what types of danger are lurking around every virtual corner on the Net, and what type of protection should a computer have? Here is a quick “bird’s eye view" of three online threats - spyware, adware and malware.

First, let’s discuss spyware. These nocuous little programs peek over your shoulder, so to speak, watching your Web surfing habits. They then transmit this information back to the spyware source. This might not seem like any big deal at first blush; that is, until it becomes nearly impossible to use your browser because your computer has become so slow. You see, these programs constantly send information back to their source, and to do that, they use up an ever-increasing amount of your computer’s resources. There’s the rub, really. The spyware is eavesdropping on you without your permission and using your own equipment to do it.

Some spyware programs are designed to get even more up close and personal. They search for passwords, email addresses, personal information and any security weaknesses your computer might have. So your bandwidth is being used, your computer is being overloaded with programs that aren’t even yours, and you are at real risk of identity theft. Spyware is not just an annoyance to be tolerated. It seriously jeopardizes your computer and personal security.

Next up, adware. If you have ever cursed at those stupid pop-up ads, you have been a victim of adware. This program creates those irritating pop-ups as well as the banner ads you frequently see on websites. But did you know that adware is also typically bundled with popular downloads? Some of these downloads not only contain adware but also spyware designed to track your Web browsing. Other adware programs are incredibly aggressive, adding unwanted software to your computer system or even hijacking your browser.

Malware is a nickname for malicious software. Malware programs are designed with one purpose in mind - maximum damage to computer systems. In addition to viruses and Trojan horses, malware can insert tiny programs called backdoors into your computer. These Trojans and backdoors can be used to hijack your computer, your keyboard and even your mouse. Viruses can be executed in your computer via these backdoors, and your hijacked computer can even be used to hack into other computers.

So what can you do about these threats, short of swearing off of the Internet forever? The best defense is a good offense, even in the world of computers. So purchase comprehensive anti-virus and anti-spyware programs, and update them at least once per week.

Also, be sure that your computer is up-to-date on all Windows security patches. If you are not sure whether all the holes in your operating system have been plugged, go to Microsoft Windows Update online.
