Back to Basics on Keywords
Keywords are major players in the world of online business. The right keywords or key phrases can make your website traffic light up like a well-decked Christmas tree. Choose the wrong keywords and, well, imagine a tumbleweed blowing through a dusty, dried-up ghost town. But what exactly is a keyword, and why does it possess such massive power on the Internet?
Put quite simply, a keyword or key phrase is one that a user - your potential customer - believes is relevant to the information she is looking for. So your potential customer goes online to a search engine tool such as ExactSeek.com and enters the keyword she is seeking. The search engine tool springs into action, looking through its database of thousands of files at lightning-fast speed. In just a matter of seconds, the user has a listing of webpages which are relevant to that particular keyword or key phrase. The bottom line is that keywords are what will lead search engine users to your website.
Since search engines run on keywords, choosing the right keywords or key phrases is absolutely essential to drive new customers to your website. So choose wisely.
First, consider the specifics of your products or services and then do bit of brainstorming to come up with a list of words that relate to these products or services. For the sake of example, let’s say you sell handmade candles. What keyword or phrase would someone search for if he were looking for this product? Since your products are handmade candles, some good keywords might be “votive candles", “pillar candles" and “scented candles".
A cautionary note on keywords is worthwhile at this point, however. Do not include keywords in your list unless they are directly pertinent to your products or services. So, if your website sells handmade candles, you would not use “Pamela Anderson" or “MP3" as keywords. Doing so is considered spam and will result in your website being banned from a number of very popular search engines.
Another common keyword error that can cost you dearly is the use of “stop words." These are words like “and", “the" or even “Internet". Remember, the more specific your keywords are, the more likely potential customers are to find your website via search engines.
