Computer Patches Plug Digital Holes

Once upon a time, a bug was another name for an insect or maybe a Volkswagen Beetle. Now, though, the word “bug" can just as well refer to a computer glitch. While bugs do not seem to be found often in new computer hardware, it is becoming increasingly tougher to find software that is not riddled with bugs. This growing infestation has given birth to a new digital concept, the patch.

A digital patch is similar to a tire patch in that they both plug holes. But instead of a bit of rubber, a digital patch is a bit of computer code that tells a computer what to do to correct a problem. So when a computer manufacturer, such as Microsoft, fails to discover a bug in their computer programming until after a product has been placed on the market, they issue a patch to fix the problem. Typically, a link to the patch along with instructions on how to download and install it are posted on the manufacturer’s website. So if downloads are fairly familiar territory to you, you should have no problem at all with this process.

But patches also serve important functions other than correcting software bugs. Computer patches are also used to correct programming flaws and holes in security that a hacker can use to gain unauthorized access to a computer. When computer manufacturers offer patches for their software, the purpose may be to correct some bug that caused substandard equipment performance, or the patch just might be designed to plug a hole in the software’s security. A word of caution is in order at this point, however. Only download patches that are posted directly on the appropriate computer manufacturer’s website, and if you have any reason to suspect a patch’s authenticity, contact the manufacturer prior to downloading it.

Bugs and the patches that fix them have become commonplace in today’s sophisticated digital world, but as consumers, we cannot afford to become complacent about them. To do so is to risk your computer’s efficiency, security and protection from dangerous viruses. To quote Cat Stephens, “Oh baby, it’s a wild world out there!"
