Why Business Networking Works

The concept of business networking isn’t a new one. Its basis is
in the old adage ‘It’s not what you know, it’s who you know’ –
and the aim of business networking is to increase ‘who you know’
exponentially. Here’s a quick overview of how business
networking works, and more importantly why business networking
works.

Business Networking Lets You Take Full Advantage of Who You Know
For a quick example of why business networking works, try this
reverse networking exercise.

Grab a pen and a sheet of paper. Across the top, write down the
names of five people that you know either personally or through
your business. Under their names, write down their business, and
under that, two things each that you know that they need for
their business. Your list might look something like this:

Pete Smith   Dan Brown   D. Worth     A. Walsh   Terry Dane

Mechanic     Lawyer        Writer        Leads        Computer repair

Advertising   Marketing    Computer    Car           Insurance
Accounting   Computers   Contacts    Customers  Equipment

Looking at your list, think of just one way that you could help
each of your five friends connect with something that they need.
If Andrea needs her car inspected quickly, you could give her
Pete’s name. If Dave’s computer needs a new hard drive, you can
tell him about Terry. Pete’s looking for someone to write a new
ad for his business – well, you know a writer!

Because they know YOU, each of your friends ‘knows’ someone who
can get them what they want – through you. Now imagine it in
reverse. Even if each of them only knows five people, you have
contacts to twenty-five other people. If the five of you band
together and agree to refer people to each other, you’ve built a
basic business network.

Why Business Networking Can Improve Your Business
Ask ten marketing professionals what the best form of business
advertising is and they’ll all give you the same answer:
word-of-mouth referrals. Ask any salesperson how he gets his
best sales leads and he’ll tell you: through other satisfied
customers. It’s a simple fact of life, and the single biggest
reason why business networking can improve your bottom line.

People are more likely to trust their business to someone that
they know, or to someone that was referred to them through
someone that they know.

When you join a business network, you’re increasing the number
of people you know who know someone who know someone else who
know more people and so on and so on. By committing to refer
business to others within your network, you’re helping your
business grow by helping others grow their businesses.
